Vitamin D and female hair loss

Medical Studies have found that women with hair loss issues often have lower levels of vitamin D, with the deficiency linked to more severe hair loss. We spend more time indoors at work and at home, and remember that Vitamin D cannot be obtained through glass.

This is Kathleen - apologies for the poor photograph. I met her in my sister-in-laws house in Co Down. Kathleen works in an office in the Isle of Man. She didn't know she was so low in Vit D until she got tested, but she did know that her hair was falling out in clumps. With a noticeable bald patch and the associated embarrassment this caused.

This was Kathleen about 2 months later. She does have a bit of a way to go. It takes time for Vit D levels to increase in the body, but the obvious bald spot has gone and new hair has grown.

But How Much Vitamin D Do You Need? These are the common levels recommended

Ages 51–70:    600 IU  daily
Over 70:          800 IU daily
But For VIT D  Deficiency: Some studies suggest that doses over 2,000 IU per day may be needed to correct deficiency in menopausal women.

Important: Taking more than 4,000 IU per day is not recommended without medical supervision, as excessive vitamin D can be harmful.

Remember also that as estrogen levels drop during menopause, your body becomes less efficient at absorbing calcium, increasing the risk of osteoporosis (weakened bones). Vitamin D is crucial for helping your body absorb calcium and maintain strong bones. Medical Studies show that postmenopausal women with higher vitamin D intake have a lower risk of fractures, even more so than those who simply increase calcium intake alone.

I think we are only at the beginning of finding out how Vitamin D is so important as part of our health..

An Irish Times article in Aug 2022 found that insufficient vitamin D was also linked to fourfold increase in risk of death among Covid-19 patients.

Vitamin D is one of our most important vitamins, and yet numerous studies have found that adults have low or very low levels, mainly due to spending most of our days indoors.

I've started taking Vitamin D as part of my daily hair routine.

Ive also been diagnosed with osteopenia (thats lower than normal bone density) ..  Vitamin D is crucial for helping your body absorb calcium and maintain strong bones. Studies show that postmenopausal women with higher vitamin D intake have a lower risk of fractures, even more so than those who simply increase calcium intake alone

Vitamin D is an amazing vitamin, because its so closely related to hormonal issues..And thats why its often referred to as the hormone Vitamin..
